Bittersweet Rolex Competition in 2009

Posted by Ali on April 26, 2009

The Rolex competition this year was amazing, as expected!

As we all know, the world of horses is bittersweet. They are amazing animals that bring joy and hope into our lives. It was very unfortunate that on Saturday, April 25 on the cross country course Kingpin and his rider and partial owner Mike Winter took a fall at Fence #10. Kingpin was an Irish Sport Horse gelding, born in 1996. The team was in 18th place after the dressage competition, and competed in the 2008 Rolex Competition, finishing 12th that year, and also competed in the 2008 Olympics. Unfortunately, Kingpin passed away on the field, andMike Winter was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation. Spectators have said that Kingpin fell upon landing the fence. I have not heard of any information regarding the cause of Kingpin’s death, or an update on Mr. Winter’s condition. I do wish Mr. Winter and his close ones the best, as I’m sure this is very hard for them. This is a harsh reminder that accidents happen, and things don’t always turn out ok. My condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.

On a lighter note, congratulations to Headley Britannia and her rider Lucinda Fredricks riding for Australia – they took the gold today! They stayed in the top 3 all weekend, and gave it their all! Congratulations again!

Also a congrats to Ringwood Cockatoo and rider Bettina Hoy from Germany, and My Bobby Boy and rider Bruce O. Davidson Jr. riding for the US – coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively!

Check back for an update posted about Kingpin and Mr. Winters, also we’ll be adding a Rolex 2009 photo gallery! Until then stay safe and keep your chins up!
